Read to Your Family
Our Read to Your Family program is designed to engage parents and caregivers in their children’s reading development while encouraging children to become proficient readers. This program gives families the opportunity to share in the excitement of reading a book together, which strengthens the learning experience in the home.
The Read to Your Family program motivates students to reach the Pittsburgh Public Schools' 25 Book reading goal through family engagement, school recognition, and incentives. Children receive recognition from teachers and principals, such as a special gold star posted on the classroom or office wall, each time they read a book aloud with a family member. This program provides incentives to participating children and families, such as educational games, books, or gift certificates to local book stores.
This program emphasizes the importance of literacy to families, while adding another layer of reading motivation for children. Since 1993, the Read to Your Family program has helped more than 6,200 children and families share more than 94,000 books together.
